About the Work & History
This mixed-media portrait combines precise graphite line with fluid acrylic washes, creating a balance between realism and abstraction. The reclining figure is captured in a moment of quiet tension, her gesture extending forward as color softens, drips, and dissolves across the surface. Warm earth tones and flushed reds are offset by delicate line work, lending the composition depth and emotional resonance.
Intentional drips and open edges introduce movement and material honesty, emphasizing vulnerability alongside strength. The airy ground contrasts with more fully rendered passages, producing an intimate, modern atmosphere that reflects Colleen Ross’s expressive approach to figurative painting where gesture, surface, and mood remain central.
Intentionally offered as a studio study, this original piece presents collectors with a uniquely accessible opportunity to acquire a large-scale figurative work directly from the studio archive.
